This protein which is called FGF1 plays a natural role in human cell growth and tissue repair, but it never enters the bloodstream. People who are diabetes experts found out that if they inject protein into a muscle and interacted with the blood, it can dramatically reduce blood sugar levels.
This protein also reverses the root cause of type 2 diabetes by making the metabolic system react to insulin when it had been failing to do that. Just one injection of this protein restored the blood sugar levels to a healthy range in obese mice with a rodent version of type 2 diabetes. Researchers found out that the continued treatment with the protein reversed the insensitivity of the insulin.
People with this disease become less sensitive when it comes to the effects of the hormone by forcing up their blood sugar.
Professor Ronald Evans, of the Salk Institute in La Jolla, California said that this is a big deal because the treatment is simple to make. He also added that they are at a very early stage, but they already know so much about the protein which is why they have a head start.

Dr. Michael Downes, also from the Salk Institute said that many previous studies which injected FGF1 showed no effect on healthy mice. But when they injected it into a diabetic mouse, they saw the dramatic improvement in glucose.
